CHRISTOLOGY

DOCTRINE OF JESUS CHRIST (Christology)

 INTRODUCTION:

The close kinship of Jesus Christ with Christianity is one of the distinctive features of the Christian religion.  If you take away from Christianity the name and person of Jesus Christ what have you left?  Nothing!  From beginning to end, in all various phases and aspects and elements, the Christian faith and life is determined by the person and work of Jesus Christ.

His deity.

The Deity of Jesus Christ is a vital doctrine (teaching).  The entire purpose of the gospel (good news) is to present Jesus Christ as God.  If Jesus Christ is not the Son of God and God the Son, than the gospel is an unnecessary waste.

His sufferings.

The book and chapter that most vividly explains the suffering of Jesus Christ is Isaiah Chapter 53.

His offices.

Office of Prophet:

Prophets of old declared the whole counsel of God, they spoke to men about God and Jesus Christ, as the perfect prophet not only expounded the Word of God, He was the Word and became flesh. (John 1:16)

The Bible says:

  1. He called Himself a prophet (Matt. 13:57; Luke 4:24; 13:33-34)
  2. The people knew He was a prophet (Matt. 21:11; Luke 7:16; 24:19-20)
  3. The people knew Jesus Christ was “that prophet”. Read John 6:14 and Deut. 8:15 (same prophet)
  4. Moses and all the prophets spoke about “that prophet” Jesus Christ (Acts 3:22-24)
  5. He claimed to bring a message from God (John 8:26-28; 14:10-24; 17:6, 8, 14, 26)

Office of Priest.

As the Priest:

Jesus Christ suffered in man’s stead and satisfied divine holiness and opened the way for God to pardon and restore the guilty.

  1. Jesus Christ was, and is sinless.
  2. He secures, on the basis of Atonement, all of our temporal and spiritual blessings.
  3. He is a kingly one robed with the full splendor of the throne of God, having the distinctive glory of a finished saving work

In the office of High Priest Jesus Christ is our:

Intercessor:                (To meet on behalf of another) Romans 8:34; Isaiah 53:12

Mediator:                    (To meet on behalf of another for peace) Hebrews 12:24; I Timothy 2:5; Romans 5:1; Luke 23:33-34.

Advocate:                   (To meet on behalf of another for peace, by argument) I John 2:1; John 14:16; 17:11

Hebrews 2:17                           Merciful and faithful High Priest making reconciliation

Hebrews 3: 1                            High Priest

Hebrews 4:14-16                     Sinless High Priest we can approach

Hebrews 7:24-26                    Unchangeable, ever liveth, holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, higher than the heavens

Hebrews 8:1                            Sits next to the Father

Hebrews 9:11, 14-16               High Priest, Eternal Spirit, Mediator, Redeemer

Office of King He is.

King–One of the grandest of ancient prophecies was that of a King who would come having salvation (Zech. 9:9)

King of Glory–He is the King of glory and the Lord of Glory who cruel men crucified (Psa. 24:7-10; I Cor. 2:8)

King appointed of God–(Psa. 2:6)

King of Kings–This is a title indicating supreme power (Rev. 17:14; 19:16)

King over all the earth–(Psa. 47:7; Zech. 14:9)

King of the Jews–A worldly ruler wrote a title that is Biblically correct (John 19:19) Born King of the Jews (Matt. 2:2)

A thought to ponder: Do we honor and obey Him as King of our lives?  Does He reign on the throne of our heart?

His return. The second coming:

John 14:2-3                 Jesus said “I will come again “

Acts 1:11                     Jesus Christ shall come again bodily just as He left

1 Thess. 4:13-18          Those who are saved, living and dead will meet Jesus Christ in the air

II Thess. 1:7-9             Jesus Christ is coming with His angels.

Matthew 25:6-10         Jesus Christ is coming for His bride

James 5:7-8                 Jesus Christ our Lord draweth nigh

A thought to ponder:

It may be that Jesus Christ has delayed His coming to give you an opportunity to accept Him as your personal Saviour.  Have you?

Now to the born-again Christians, whoever you are, Pack your bags Jesus Christ is coming And Heaven is your eternal home no if, ands, or buts about it. (It is your absolute destination) Now to the lost/heathen, the ones that rejected Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour, pack your bags Jesus Christ is your Judge and Hell is your eternal torment no if, and’s, or buts about it. (It is your absolute destination)
